Catholic Schools Week: Catholic Schools Week takes place this week January 31-February 6. The theme is “Catholic Schools – Sharing our story; Celebrating our faith”. Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country do in providing a moral education for our children. We are proud to emphasize intellectual, spiritual, physical and social values in our students. During this week special activities are planned at St. Mary’s including:
· Daily prayers for our Catholic schools, students, parents and teachers
· There was a Catholic trivia contest for primary and intermediate students on Tuesday with class prizes for the highest scores. Congratulations to Gr. 5 for a perfect score with the intermediate questions and to Gr. 3 who completed 11/12 primary questions correctly.
· Students may be completing a writing piece about receiving a Catholic education
· St. Mary’s staff may also share with the students why they chose to teach or work in a Catholic school.
· On Wednesday, Feb. 9 our Class Representatives and Student Council will represent St. Mary’s students at a special Catholic Schools Week Mass at Corpus Christi Church.
We give special thanks to God that you have chosen to give your child(ren) the gift of Catholic education.
First Reconciliation: Congratulations to our Gr. 2 students who celebrated their First Reconciliation last night. We are happy that they have come to know God in this special way. We ask God to bless them and their parents.
Olympic Celebration: We had a great afternoon celebrating the 2010 Olympics. In our closing ceremonies, Fr. Pierre blessed Mrs. Der and our community wished her well as she begins her journey as an Olympic volunteer. She received her own “gold” medal of St. Francis of Assisi to honour her gifts of hospitality and volunteering in Christ’s name. Mrs. Der was also recently interviewed by a reporter from the BC Catholic and the article can be found in the February 1, 2010 issue. Results from the poster contest are listed below. Congratulations to all participants on a job well done.
Primary Intermediate
1st C.J. (Gr. 2) 1st Jamie (Gr. 6)
2nd D. Anne (Gr. 3) 2nd Erica (Gr. 6)

Hot Lunch Orders for March: They are due back by Friday, Feb. 5th at 9:00 a.m. If you are ordering for more than 1 student, please send orders together with 1 cheque for payment.
Out of Uniform Day: Friday, February 5th will be our out-of-uniform day this month. Students can bring $1 to wear Valentine’s Day colours: red, white or pink. Proceeds will be donated to the Vancouver SPCA. Also this Friday, class representatives and student council will be hosting a bake sale at morning and lunch recesses. Students can bring extra money for the bake sale. We are hoping for high participation from all classes.
Volunteer Policy: Your child brought home a very important letter Monday, February 1 outlining St. Mary’s plan to comply with provincial legislation and CISVA Policy regarding parents/guardians who volunteer with children in an unsupervised capacity. If you did not receive it Monday please check with your child. Procedures are to be in place in all BC schools for the safety and protection of all children. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Thank you Letter: We’ve received a thank you letter from the Sister Marianne Rohrer, the Executive Director from the Sisters of Atonement Benevolent Society.
Dear Students of St. Mary’s School,
Thank you for the donation of $208.95 monies raised through St. Mary’s Christmas Concert. The Franciscan Sisters Benevolent Society mission statement states, “Our mission is to respect and affirm the dignity of the people we serve, and when possible, to empower them with leadership skills to determine their own futures and to create their own alternatives.” We try to empower the men and women to take responsibility for themselves and others. We have hired several residents in this area to assist us.
We continue to serving approximately 600 clients a bowl of hot homemade soup, several pastries and sometimes fruit, yogurt or candy.
The Men’s Clothing Room is also witnessing about 60 men coming each day.
These small ways are hopefully saying, “You are special to us, created by our loving God and you deserve to be treated with God’s richest blessings.
May the good Lord continue to bless you and your families throughout 2010.
Peace and All Good,
Sister Marianne Rohrer, SA Executive Director
Haiti Relief: St. Mary’s was able to send $431.00 to the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace from our Olympic Celebration. Thank you everyone!
Lenten Mite Box Program: St. Mary’s students will be participating in the Lenten Mite Box program again this year. We hope the students will come to see their sacrificial offerings as gifts to God as well as being used for assistance of the education of the 16 seminarians currently studying at Seminary of Christ the King, Mission, BC and St. Augustine, in Toronto. We pray that this project will continue to help promote vocations among our children. The mite boxes are not due back to school until after Easter (April 6). You can expect your child to bring home his/her mite box Tuesday, February 9 after a special blessing at our School Mass at 1:30pm.
Pope Benedict proclaimed June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010 the year of the priest. Our Archbishop Miller has asked teachers and students alike to honour our parish priests. We are doing this with a special Mass on Tuesday, March 16th at 9:30 a.m. We would like to make this a parent/student Mass. We hope, by telling you early enough, that perhaps you can arrange to come! Also, we would love to involve you directly in the Mass! If you would like to help out (reading, prayers, singing, offertory) please let Mrs. Diewold know. We will arrange a special student/parent choir practice. Let’s get together to thank Fr. Pierre and Fr. Marcel for all they do.
St. Mary’s Youth Ministry: "Our youth have been working hard at school and at home (I hope!) so it’s time to reward them. Youth Ministry is having a Game Show Night. Make sure to send your children in grades 6 to 8 to our Jr. YM Even on Monday, Feb. 8 in the Church Basement. With food, music, games and fellowship you can’t go wrong. First time YM attendees and their friend who brings them will get a chance to win one of the Olympic Game tickets. And there will be other surprises as well!"
